Anxiety
Goal: Reduce anxiety symptoms and increase client’s ability to tolerate uncertainty, regulate distress, and engage in desired activities.
Objectives:
Client will identify anxiety triggers, body cues, avoidance patterns, and maintaining factors.
Client will practice grounding, breathing, mindfulness, or somatic regulation skills.
Client will develop more balanced thoughts related to worry, fear, perfectionism, or anticipated threat.
Client will gradually reduce avoidance and increase participation in meaningful activities.
Interventions:
Therapist will provide psychoeducation on anxiety, the nervous system, fight/flight/freeze responses, and avoidance cycles.
Therapist will use CBT interventions to identify cognitive distortions and build more flexible thinking.
Therapist will introduce grounding, relaxation, mindfulness, and somatic regulation strategies.
Therapist will support gradual exposure or behavioral experiments as clinically appropriate.
Goal: Increase tolerance of uncertainty and reduce reassurance-seeking, over-planning, and avoidance behaviors.
Objectives:
Client will identify situations where anxiety leads to reassurance-seeking, excessive checking, over-researching, avoidance, or repeated planning.
Client will learn to distinguish between helpful problem-solving and anxiety-driven attempts to gain certainty.
Client will practice tolerating uncertainty in small, manageable steps.
Client will reduce reliance on reassurance or avoidance behaviors and increase values-based action despite anxiety.
Interventions:
Therapist will provide psychoeducation on the role of uncertainty, reassurance-seeking, and avoidance in maintaining anxiety.
Therapist will use CBT interventions to help client identify anxious predictions and evaluate the evidence for feared outcomes.
Therapist will support behavioral experiments or gradual exposure to uncertainty as clinically appropriate.
Therapist will help client develop coping statements and values-based responses to anxiety-driven urges.
Goal: Improve nervous system regulation and increase client’s ability to manage physical symptoms of anxiety.
Objectives:
Client will identify physical cues of anxiety, including muscle tension, racing heart, shortness of breath, nausea, restlessness, or feeling keyed up.
Client will practice grounding, breathing, mindfulness, or somatic regulation strategies between sessions.
Client will develop a personalized anxiety regulation plan for use during periods of heightened distress.
Client will increase confidence in experiencing anxiety symptoms without escalating fear or avoidance.
Interventions:
Therapist will provide psychoeducation on the nervous system, fight/flight/freeze responses, and the body’s anxiety response.
Therapist will teach and practice grounding, paced breathing, mindfulness, and somatic regulation skills.
Therapist will use CBT interventions to address catastrophic interpretations of physical anxiety symptoms.
Therapist will support client in developing and practicing a personalized regulation plan for managing anxiety in daily life.
